ROLA
About the Ferry Operator
The Rolling Highway (ROLA) is an intermodal transport concept that efficiently combines road and rail freight. Complete trucks or articulated lorries are loaded onto special freight trains to cover parts of their journey by rail. The drivers travel in an accompanying passenger carriage, allowing them to take their legally mandated rest breaks during the trip. This combined transport system relieves congestion on heavily used transit routes, reduces heavy goods traffic on roads, and makes a significant contribution to lowering emissions and protecting the environment. RAlpin has been operating the Rolling Highway between Freiburg im Breisgau and Novara since 2001. This connection enables safe and cost-effective transport—both day and night. ROLA is particularly well-suited for time-critical shipments as well as sensitive and high-value goods. Road vehicles carrying all types of cargo are transported, including chemical products, high-tech components, spare parts, perishable foodstuffs, and air freight.
